Gender-based Political Violence: A Global Perspective on the Silencing and Exclusion of Women in Power Spaces

Abstract

Gender-based violence, present in both private and public spaces, transcends national borders and reflects structural inequalities between men and women. With the expansion of women’s participation in public life, especially in politics, specific forms of violence have intensified. Among them, gender-based political violence stands out, as it seeks to exclude women from positions of power, thereby undermining democracy. This paper analyzes the phenomenon as a violation of fundamental rights and an obstacle to full female citizenship, using a qualitative method through a literature review and documentary analysis of relevant normative frameworks and institutional experiences in Brazil, Mexico, and Italy.
