Abstract

Search, search, bitch: Misogynist digital communities disseminating sexual images without consent

Hispasexy is an image board where sexual images of women – stolen, filtered, or created with Artificial Intelligence – are shared without their consent in Spain. In this work, we conceive Hispasexy as a digital masculine community that, thanks to collaborative misogyny, perpetrates a little-explored form of sexual violence: the creation of violent nude files. The data was produced by combining a digital ethnography with interviews with experts. The results show that Hispasexy’s gendered affordances facilitate and promote the perpetration of these violent practices. Lastly, we discuss the appropriation that the perpetrators make of the stolen photographs.
